Diet/ Weight Loss

First let me say what we put in our mouths is not only the number one factor in decreasing our chances of diseases, but research suggest in some cases it can reverse disease as well. Is this an easy thing to do? In America it is not.

Over the years I have taken part in so many of the diets out there. I’ve never been a heavy person, but struggled with needing to lose 10-15 lbs here or there. As a child (70’s), I ate horribly. The transition of food convenience was really getting off the ground: Boxed/ canned foods, fast food, eating school lunch vs home cooked dinner from the night before… and today is even worse. America is the most unhealthy first world country in the world. The growing rate of diseases like heart attack, cancer (even with children), and Alzheimer’s continues to climb at an alarming rate. Not only because of the foods we eat, but also due to our choices in health care and pharmaceuticals. It’s time to take control of our health and longevity.

In my early 20’s I became vegetarian for ethical purposes. I’ve tried the Atkins, Weight Watchers, South Beach, Paleo, and for the past 2 years I have been eating low carb. I hate to say it, but it’s the exact opposite of what I should have been doing. I found out a few months ago that I have the Apoe gene mutation. The interesting thing here is that I learned, based on the allele (gene type) I have of this mutation, I should be eating a plant based diet. Ugh! I do have family history of Alzheimer’s and for this reason, I eat mostly plants and I am a Flexitarian. It’s important to know about genes like this because the research has been done and shows the link between the allele, type of diet, and preventing these diseases. (See my Gene Mutation page for more information.)

One of my favorite quotes is a Nigerian Proverb, “Not to know is bad. Not to wish to know is worse.”
